Nokia Reveals New N79 and N85 Smartphones
September 8, 2008
Nokia has recently unveiled two new models in their Nseries of smartphones; the N85 and N79.
The N85 is a two way slider phone (similar to that found on the N95 and N95 8GB, as well as the upcoming N96) whereas the N79 is a single bar shape, both have an impressive line up of multimedia features with slight modifications that I’m sure will appeal to different people. Gaming, photos, navigation and music blend together with the newest Ovi and third party services via 3.5G HSDPA and Wi-Fi connectivity to make discovering and sharing experiences quick and seamless.
On the games and entertainment side, the N85 takes the lead with sport dedicated N-Gage gaming keys situated for gameplay in landscape view and it will also be loaded with at least 10 N-Gage gaming title plus a voucher
to activate one full game license (according to Nokia).
The screen has also been upgraded from a 2.4″ LCD (colour TFT) to a 2.6″ AMOLED (Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode). A big advantage of OLED displays is that they require no backlighting element and thus use far less power. Therefore the N85 will be capable of as much as 28 hours of music playback on a single charge.
The N79 may not come out on top in terms of gaming however this compact Smartphone is both lighter and more capable than its predecessor, the N78, as well as the N85 for size.
Similarly to the N85, the N79 offers a full range of multimedia capabilities including built-in GPS and an FM transmitter, which makes it possible to listen to music via a car radio; for users who prefer headphones there is a 3.5 mm audio jack
The N79 will also feature 5 different colour Xpress-on smart swappable covers for the more fashion-sensitive among us. The colours are: Light Sea Blue, Espresso Brown, Olive Green, White and Coral red. Nokia have said a combination of three of these will come with each Nokia N79 pack.
Both the N79 and N85 have thankfully had their cameras upgraded to 5.0 Megapixels equipped with dual LED flash, Carl Zeiss optics, a lens cover and the ability to geo-tag images to specific locations, in comparison to the previous N81’s simple 2 megapixel camera and the N78’s slightly more modest 3.2.
As you can probably tell the two mobile phones are very similar, pretty much matching in specs, with the N85 winning in relation to gaming and the N79 for size and versatility however a big difference between the pair is that the N85 is expected to come with an 8GB microSD card whereas the N79 falls slightly behind with 4GB. The N85’s memory can also be upgraded to 16GB just in case you think 8 is not enough, whic
h I highly doubt as Nokia in the past stated that the new 8GB N95 could hold up to “6000 songs or 20 hours of video” which is more than enough in my books.
Both the N85 and N79 should be available in the UK as early as next month so keep an eye on the blog for further updates.
