How do I share my phone’s 3G/4G connection with devices on the LAN?
As I understand it, the “mobile hotspot” feature in android causes the phone to behave like a router allowing clients to connect to it. (Ex: Laptop connects to phone. Laptop sends internet request to phone, phone sends it to 3G ISP.)

Instead, I would like my phone to behave more like the way a windows pc behave when using “internet connection sharing”. (Ex: Laptop and phone connect to router/modem. Laptop sends internet requests to router, router sends request to phone, phone sends it to 3G ISP. In this scenario all requests go through the router first rather than directly between the devices.)

The reason I want to do this is so that my devices can always connect to the same router (regardless of whether the phone is providing the internet service or some other internet source is connected to the router), so that I can make use of many of the advanced features of the router (QoS, bandwidth quotas, redundant links) and so that devices can make use of the phone’s hotspot characteristics using their existing wired connections rather than needing to enable wifi to connect to the phone.

The primary motivation is that I don’t want to use 3G/4G for ALL internet service (due to bandwidth caps, slower speeds, the fact the the phone won’t always be present on the network), but the internet connection in the area is not extremely reliable (now and then it goes out for 30 minutes or so) so I want the phone to transparently act as a redundant internet provider. I would like the following scenario:
– When wired internet is up, use that.
– When wired internet is down, if the phone is currently on the wifi network, the phone serves internet requests via 3G/4G.
This should be transparent to the clients themselves. They should not have to know which internet source they are using.

The idea is that my phone, which supports tethering and a role as a wifi hotspot, provides internet connection redundancy which is used only as needed.

Tethering by USB is not ideal for two reasons. Both of these stem from the reason I wanted the phone to connect to a wifi router rather than a PC: transparency. First, I want it to operate using wifi so that when I enter/leave the area the phone automatically connects to the network (without manually connecting it to the network like with USB since manually connecting the phone is time consuming) and so that I can walk around the house using my phone rather than being (literally) tethered to the PC with my “mobile” phone. The second reason is that this method requires an “always on” PC. I don’t want it to be a requirement that a computer is on in order to have this system work. Not all devices on the network are even PCs (for example the Wii, the netflix streaming device, etc.) so I don’t want to have to turn my pc on and plug my phone in order to use the internet on the Wii. 1) You can pay your phone company for tethering.

2) You can do what I did. I got the EasyTether ap (free for the light version, but I paid $ 10 for the full version once I saw it worked well) which allows my computer to connect to the phone’s Internet via the USB cable.
Once it was connected I looked at the properties of network connection the PC was using and then enabled sharing. That essentially turns my computer into a router.
Then I plug my WiFi router into my computer. That is, an Ethernet cable goes from my PC into the router’s Internet port (not the 4 ports that computers would use. Basically my PC replaces a DSL modem or other Internet source).
Once I do that any wireless device can access the router via WiFi or by plugging into one of the 4 free ports, which gets it’s Internet from my computer, which gets it’s Internet from my phone.

It’s not an ideal solution, but I live in the middle of nowhere and my Internet drops a lot so it’s better than nothing.

That’s easily achievable if you have a router that can, as redundant as it sounds, wirelessly bridge wifi signals. I configured a 802.11n capable TP-LINK router with such feature, called “WDS bridging”. So, all you have to do is set the router’s wireless repeat to retransmit the phone’s wifi-hotspot signals, and also leave it connected to the DSL/Cable modem by means of ethernet, as an alternate connection point. A possible downside about all this is: if you can’t get the connection to work with your phone, that’s because the router’s repeater mode may rely on the wifi source (in this case, your phone), to provide the IPs (DHCP server), and thus you have to turn the router’s DHCP off. In such case, if you can get your phone to host a small DHCP (and maybe also NAT) server, then all in all your clients will have to connect to the router only, just the way you want it to be. Check your actual devices manuals to see if they feature such wireless repeat mode. Just my two cents, good luck.
