In case the title didn’t spell things out clearly enough, Google have announced the winners of the second annual Android Developer Challenge. As any Android enthusiast will tell you, the Android Developer Challenge is designed to reward the innovators with cold hard cash for their efforts with a total prize pool of $1.5 up for grabs.
The big winners were the developers behind SweetDreams, an excellent app that bagged its creators $250,000. The app is a revolutionary tool that will finally allow you to go to sleep without worrying about changing your phone settings in order to avoid unwelcome late night calls. Activating the app silences calls and texts so you can get some un-interrupted shut eye and will also turn off features such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to help conserve battery life.
Also receiving recognition (and a nice wad of cash) were, among others, What the Doodle!?, an excellent multi-player Pictionary style game and WaveSecure, a complete mobile security solution that protects your device, data and privacy. A total of 30 developers were rewarded for their efforts (you can check out the full list here) without a single fart app in sight!
Apps are the in thing for the current crop of high end mobile phones with the run away leader being Apple with it’s hugely successful App Store (boasting over 100,000 apps). But, if Google continue to dangle a carrot in front of developers, the tides could turn in favour of Android.
