Palm Pre gets video recording… sort of

Here at the Mobiles.co.uk Blog, we really liked the new Palm Pre, we even said so in our review. The phone looks and feels great, has a brand new operating system to die for and a fantastic capacitive touchscreen. But, there was one small chink in its armor at launch and one that is still niggling at potential owners. The Pre can’t capture video. For all the bells and whistles such as Palm Synergy, Universal search and the revolutionary multi-tasking capabilities, the built in camera on the Pre is completely flummoxed by moving images. It was a big problem. Until now that is.

Unfortunately the fix comes courtesy of the WebOS homebrew community rather than an official update from Palm and while it is only alpha software for the time being, it does show that the Pre is capable of video capture and hints at an official update in the near future. The app, known as Precorder, records video at 30 frames per second (fps) capturing 480 x 320 pixels and can even access the LED flash for recording in low light. It is still a little rough around the edges, there is for instance no viewfinder or preview whilst recording, but on the plus side it is absolutely free and does finally bring the Pre up to speed with the current gen iPhone 3GS. Check out the sample video below to see some footage recorded on the Pre by one of the early adopters. Come on Palm, we know the Pre is capable of it now so give us video capture!
