Review: Mediabox N900 App

MediaBox N900 Maemo app Review: Mediabox N900 AppAfter a long waiting period, the popular Mediabox for Maemo has been “fremantelized” and is available for the Nokia N900. With several major user interface improvements, it is now much easier to use the software. A major addition to Mediabox is support for both portrait and landscape views. Music browsing is especially more enjoyable in the portrait mode.

The core media tracker of the Fremantle OS is responsible for all media management functions, though it is entirely possible to use the file browser to manage music. Mediabox makes use of the internal FM radio chip on the N900 to bring FM radio listening to the users.

The dashboard of the Mediabox gives users access to playlists, allows browsing the device and UPnP/DLNA servers, and access indexed music, videos, and pictures. It is possible to reach almost any content users might have on the device in one or two selections.

Mediabox uses its own UPnP subsystem which is extremely lightweight and more compatible than gupnp. MediaBox is currently in the extras-devel repository for Fremantle and it is marked as an incomplete beta version. The full release is expected to be available later this month.
