Palm Blames Loss on Late Launches, Promises to be Aggressive

SUNNYVALE, USA – Palm has disappointed investors after posting a loss of US$22m for its third-quarter earnings report, sending its stock price tumbling to three quarters of its original value.

The smartphone maker had promised a powerful comeback by launching its new user-friendly webOS smartphone operating system, together with the breakthrough Palm Pre device, dubbed to be yet another “iPhone killer”. This followed few more mobile phones than ran on the same software platform, including the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus, both announced at the CES 2010 earlier this year.

The loss was not has bad as a year ago, where Palm saw a US$98m loss for its past Q3 result. The justification for the latest earnings result is the late launch of the Pre Plus, which came after the Verizon Droid, its competitor.

In terms of specific numbers, 960 000 smartphones were shipped by Palm this quarter, 23% up from Q2, and up nearly 300% year-on-year. Only 408 000 units of these smartphones were actually sold, around 30% less than the previous quarter, and way below than the 500-600 thousand sales analysts were expecting.

Palm said it expects its Q4 revenue to be less than US$150m, also below expectations.

On the upside, there are over 2 000 apps at Palm’s App Catalog.

The manufacturer’s CEO, Job RubinStein refused to comment on the possibility of a major player buying out Palm, a rumour doing the rounds in the industry.

Samsung W960 First Mobile Phone with a 3D Display

Samsung W960 3D AMOLED 1 300x154 Samsung W960 First Mobile Phone with a 3D DisplaySEOUL, South Korea – 3DTV technology has barely reached our homes, but mobile phone manufacturers are already working towards incorporating the same technology in handhelds. Samsung is understood to have a working prototype, although no official information is available as of yet.

What can certainly be achieved with regular displays is a sort of “pseudo-3D”, while manipulating a device’s internal motion sensor (accelerometer) to determine where the user is located, although this will be possible for animated content only. An example of this is the iPhone app HoloToy, by Ben Hopkins. It costs US$0.99 only, and is available at the iTunes App Store.

The rumours on the Samsung W960 suggest it features a 3.3″ 3D AMOLED touchscreen display with Wide-QVGA resolution, more specifically, where “3D stereoscopic video can be enjoyed with realistic 3D ahmolredeu [AMOLED]“. Another source points to simply a 3.2″ AMOLED touchscreen display, DNSe 2.0 audio technology, dual DMB mobile TV technology, a 3 megapixel camera, and a 3D menu.

With the extremely high prices for standalone 3DTVs, it is quite unlikely that the same concept will reach mobile phones soon, although it would certainly be a rich feature that would enable Samsung to gain some marketshare.

The handset is actually a ZTE X990, rebranded to emphasize the support for the popular instant messaging client from Microsoft. It also includes a full keyboard on its front, appropriate for heavy messaging.

The SFR Messenger Edition 251 further offers a 2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth connectivity, FM radio, microSD memory card support, and a display in landscape format.

The device is available online from ZTE, at EUR79 (US$107), although customers will have to purchase a messaging plan for unlimited IM usage.
