The BlackBerry 8520 Curve (known during its time in development as the Gemini) is now in stock at Mobiles.co.uk. BlackBerry have twigged to the huge number of teens and twenty-somethings using BlackBerry as an instant messenger device. The 8520 Curve brings the familiar style, design and emphasis on messaging only this time in a handset that wont cost all your pocket money. Curious to find out more? Read on and we’ll take a look at the new BlackBerry 8520 Curve.
The 8520 Curve features a similar design to its 8900 bigger brother thanks to the familiar BlackBerry layout of full QWERTY keyboard and navigation keys. On closer inspection we find one of the first major changes as the popular trackball has been replaced with an optical trackpad (similar to that found on a laptop). The 8520 is made of rubberised materials with nice curved edges and a light yet reassuring weight to it. The 8520 looks great in black but for those after something a little more (how to put this) colourful, a Violet version is also in the works and planned for launch next week.
As with any BlackBerry phone, the 8520 handles email effortlessly. Push email accounts can be set up directly on the phone simply requiring user names and passwords and up to 10 accounts can be set up at any one time meaning you’re never out of touch no matter where you are. The 8520 also supports BlackBerry Messenger, an instant messenger client that lets you talk to your BlackBerry wielding friends without eating into your text message allowance (the services uses your data allowance instead) and also shows information such as when a person has read your message and when they are composing a reply. The experience is much like that found on a PC or Laptop only this time it is completely mobile and perfectly pocketable.
The 8520 Curve (much like its sibling) unfortunately lacks 3G but makes up for it with W-Fi connectivity. Wi-Fi comes in handy when downloading files or browsing image heavy web sites but for general emailing and using BlackBerry instant messenger the 8520 is more than nippy enough to keep up. An impressive feat as the QWERTY keyboard on the 8520 is amongst the best we have seen so far with each key large enough to allow for some seriously fast typing.
The 8520 also boasts some serious music credentials thanks to dedicated music keys, support for up to a 16GB memory card and Bluetooth v2.0 letting you stream your music to a pair of wireless Bluetooth headphones. In addition to this we also find a 2.0 Megapixel camera which won’t be winning any awards but does a good enough job as a quick point and shoot camera which can also be used to record video too. All in all some nice features but the real draw as ever with a BlackBerry phone is the messaging. The important addition for the 8520 is the fact that it combines the BlackBerry experience with a pircetag that lets everyone get involved.
