Nokia N78 Review

July 4, 2008

The brilliant addition to the Nokia N-Series cell phone range, Nokia N78 is offered as an unlocked cell phone from Nokia. This cell phone is designed to work on the 3G HSDPA networks of AT&T and as there are some unique features like videoconferencing through the front facing camera you might find it difficult to operate it in U.S networks. However a network update is expected from Nokia that would make it a cell phone for U.S networks. As the cell phone is out for nearly $500, it does not require any contact agreement from you and this cell phone does not feature a carrier subsidy.

The design

The Nokia N78 is a basic standard looking candybar cell phone. The phone is almost featureless black slab when asleep and when you on the phone the buttons would illuminate it in a typical 12 key layout as there are some added buttons right below the bar. Most of the people found the keypad to be very small but you can carry out most of the cell phone functions through the center Navi-wheel which is more convenient. The four way navigator buttons is located at the center of the phone which is touch sensitive which acts as the scroll wheel.

The typical Symbian S60 UI is not much changed for the Nokia N78 but is has rather developed a few features like visual flourishes and fade-ins which you will appreciate. Overall the cell phone is pretty responsive and although you might face the regular symbian problems like when the applications stack up the phone would run slow. However it is rather very easy to close applications that run in the background through the dedicated application button. The team at Nokia has again used a media browser window which can be easily accessed by the silver media button besides the scroll wheel. This media browsing window is very responsive while quick browsing and scrolling but you will not find any additional functionality rather than the traditional shortcut menu.

Calling

The Nokia N78 smartphone used the HSDPA network of AT&T that offers you pretty clear calling through the phone. You will get nearly 4.5 hours for a single call which is much more than was expected by Nokia. Regarding the calling features the Nokia PC suite would do a great job as it easily synchronizes with your PC in copying your outlook contact list.

Messaging and multimedia

The cell phone offers excellent features for your messaging. Basically the cell phone supports all the SMS including a huge range of MMS options. You will find emailing through the cell phone very easy as it would also ask you if you need to set up Gmail for your IMAP. It is very capable of sending at least 5MB of vide through your email. However the client application would ask you browser and server information which is actually difficult for setting up Google talk and AIM accounts. Through its excellent 3G service you can also enjoy a number of multimedia features with Nokia N78 as it does a great job in playing videos and music.
